Poppin my Vox cherry....
Well, I think I can safely say that today was a day well spent.
Even after spending 2 hours waiting for a 5 minute audition with actors around you jabbering about how "elusive" their community is (Craigslist, anyone?), getting elbowed in the gut by a sour-faced Chinese woman hauling pink grocery bags on the bus ride home, finding out one of my favorite highschool teachers passed last night (I miss you, Ms. Hansen!!), I still say this event made the day worth waking up for.
I got home a few hours ago, and the event itself was nothing really special. It was a Formal Ball fundraiser for the Asian American Donor Program, called "Winter Paradise" (meaning there's cheesy cotton balls that imitate snow glued everywhere) and I'd been invited by a friend of mine, Yen Tran, to be "auctioned off" as a date.
The premise is simple enough. You're the merchandise and people bid on you to be their date for the night, and the money collected goes to a good cause (in this case, the AADP).
Well, I'm happy to say that out of a dozen some-odd volunteers that went up for bidding, I brought in $150 for the AADP, highest amount of all the males and second highest total (Yen volunteered and got bought for $200!).
That's a lot of money when you're talking about Vietnamese people. :D
That's right. Despite the crappy "festivities" that went on afterward and the hour-long drive home (can't afford to be speeding any more), I'm proud to say that I did more than most people do on a Saturday-- I saved someone's life.
And the fact that I met quite a few adorable girls in the process didn't hurt either.
I'd have to say my favorite event that night would have had to be... my impromptu hypnosis show. Yep. Vietnamese people, as they are wont to do, handed me a mike and asked for free entertainment.
A minute later, I had four random people on stage knocked out cold, and I'm happy to say that they all walked away happier, more confident, and less stressed.
Yep. Day well spent.
